Hello everyone,Am looking into adding some decent sound to my new plasma, but before I start looking into budgets/makes etc I just want a bit of advice. As my flat isn't huge I am hesitant to invest in a 5.1 system, as not sure where the rear speakers and wires would go.

So am leaning towards a 2.1 or 3.1 set-up but am worried that I would rather be settling for second best. Are there any 2.1 or 3.1 systems that really deliver a good surround sound or will I have to get the full 5.1 set-up to get a decent result?TIA as always!John. You can't actual have real surround sound without the rear speakers.
That's that whole idea. The sound surrounds you and isn't just fired at you from the front. The pseudo effect of surround some TVs and sound systems try to create isn't mind numbingly brilliant and some of the sound bars are quite expensive in comparison to the price you'd pay for a half decent AV amp. It's pretty easy to hide the wires for the rear speakers. Run the wire under the floor, carpets or buy special conduit that resembles skirting board. You can also get slimline cable that is flat and easy to lay under carpet.I'd suggest a 5.1 setup. You can get compact rear speakers that hang on your rear wall and don't dominate the room. As above I would recommend going 5.1.
However if budget is tight you could always start with 2.1 or 3.1 and then add the rears at a later date. This could be when more funds allow or when you get a bigger place. A good 2.1 system will be a significant improvement over the tv speakers so you will still have a smile on your face if you go that route. I always think it is better to do 2.1 or 3.1 well and then upgrade later than try to stretch to 5.1. You will end up with a better system at the end of the day and it will be longer before you feel the need to upgrade. You can either put them in the walls.
If you have pasterboard walls a hole behind the speaker and one near the skirting can mean you can normally thread it through. More solid walls need to be chased out and then replastered.
Another way is to use plastic trunking on the wall. The is a D shaped one available that looks good on the top of skirting and a little neater than bare wires going up the wall (can even buy corner stuff that looks good too). This can often be painted using wall emulsion so can blend in well. Ok, so you've convinced me that 5.1 (or more!) is the way to go. So I need some reccommendations for an amp and a set of speakers. Combined budget of about £750.
The amp will have to deal with:V+ boxWiiDVD RecorderPS3 SlimOne more thing - I am leaning towards the big floor standing type speakers for my rears (as these can sit behind the sofa and will not have to be wall mounted or anything) but would rather have smaller speakers for my fronts. Can this be done or it does it have to be either/all?Cheers everyone!
It can be done, but I think the sound wise you're wasting the back floorstanders.I would put Floorstanders at the front as well if you're putting them at the rear.Budget wise, you're going to struggle. The Wharefdale Diamond 9.4 are probably the best value F/S at the moment for £150 a pair. Then you need a centre, at about £70 and then a sub, at about £200. Maybe you could add the sub later?Or, maybe you could persude a retailer to sell you the Diamond 9.0 kit, and substitute the 9.4 speakers for the 9.0?, This should be about £140 more than the kit. This only leaves £250 for the amp, which would just get you the Onkyo 507.
